Young Frankenstein
We chose young Frankenstein to portray the atmosphere and emotion shown in the actual story and film. I chose that part of the play as I thought it was a part with a lot going on and it was the part which was the most important in the play.

The emotion shown within this play creates a tense atmosphere which can be shown in a variety of ways with lighting such as dark/dull colours and also using cold colours so it portrays that the atmosphere that the play is set in is cold.

Lighting

We chose to highlight main areas like characters or objects with spots as it focuses the audiences attention on that one area. As that one area is highlighted a key event happens like switches being flicked or a generator.

We used spots with gobos to create atmosphere. We used a spot with a gobo but used edge to fuzz it to create the effect of a moon to show that they are outside in the dark. This is important as it lets the audience know where the play is located.

Programming the lights was the part that we had to get used to as we all knew what we wanted to do with the lights but all we needed to do was program them in. With the cue sheet and the rig plan, we used washes to wash the stage with cold colours. We used the rig plan to get the channel numbers for the washes then put it into the desk and then 'at full' to put them at full intensity.

With changing colours of the spots and washes we used ML Controls to make it easier to change colour and so we could add gobos to the spots to add atmosphere.

some cues were duplicated as it was the same cue used. This made programming faster and more efficient. Although it made it faster and more efficient it did make the lights get repetitive. This could make the audience bored and lose interest in the show.
Sound
We used Qlab to cue sounds on time with the lights like the flicks of switches or the movement of platforms or even small sounds like rain or lab sounds. This makes the audience feel as though it is a real situation and get more intrigued and stuck into the play.

Sound increases immersion within the theatre show as it sets some of the scene as it is another sense. The more senses the more immersed the audience is.

With each different sound effect we had changed the levels. This worked really well as the sound effects that needed to pop out over the others did. But some sound effects were barely hearable therefore made a slightly poor watching experience.
Interrelations

As a lighting designer, you would have to consider setting the scene for what kind of area you are trying to portray. With sound, it brings another sense into the equation.

Lighting and sound work together to set the scene and create atmosphere. This helps the audience gauge the environment that the play is set in. This also helps the audience get immersed into the show.
What could we have done better?

We could have used different colours in different scenes to create different emotions as we had mostly used just white or red. We also could have used more gobos to give character to the scene and make it look like they were at the location we were trying to portray. This includes effects as some of the effects were disappointing in my opinion.

To make sure I do better within this area I will be imagining how it will look and practice making different effects on EOS family software. I can do this by using augment 3d within the EOS family software. This will help wasting time on the desk.
Overall

Overall we used spots to focus on a specific area and focus the audiences attention and we used washes to cover the empty space with open white or dark colours. As a team, we worked well as we made sure we all knew the cues so we could cue each other incase one of us forgot one.

We had all programmed really well within the small time frame as we had not had much experience with the desk. With everything well lit and main areas having spotlights on them it was clear what we were trying to portray. We could have added more colours and gobos into the lighting design as the final design was very bland.
