The equipment used within sound is used in a variety of ways to mix sounds together, manipulate sound and even remove some sound from something. For example if a singer has more high frequencies than the speaker can handle, remove the high frequencies.

Mixing Desk
Used to mix sounds together to output to different channels. This can also be used to EQ certain sound inputs and even add effects.

Microphone
There are many different cardioid microphones with different polar patterns.
Mics
Dynamic - Used on stage for music as they are very sturdy.
Condenser - Used within studios to record.
Boundary - mostly used within meetings to capture sound in the area.
Shotgun - get sound from one specific area.
Lavalier - used on shows as they are wireless

Speakers
Where the sound comes from after being mixed and can create surround sound experiences.
Types Of Speakers
Left/Right - The main output speakers to the crowd/audience
Subs - Takes bass from main speakers and plays it by itself.
monitors - speakers to allow the band or whoever is on stage to hear what's going on.
Centre - allow sound to come from the centre as well as the sides to spread out the sound and make it sound more equal.
